The role

At Highways England we are committed to looking after our natural environment and we have an important part to play in supporting wildlife and ecosystems that interact with our network. This is a new and exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping to manage and maintain our natural environment.

 

Highways England is currently recruiting for an Environmental Inspector to be based in Penrith or Preston on a fixed term 12 month contract (with possible extension).

 

You will spend time visiting and assessing habitats and environmental assets on the road network. You will feed your observations and recommendations into a programme of works to manage and maintain the environmental assets and ensure safety and environmental integrity.

 

You will provide environmental input in the scoping of asset specific risks and opportunities, while assuring adherence to defined asset policies and standards. The role includes input into environmental condition assessments and other site survey work including woodland and tree safety inspections.

 

Day to day

Undertaking environmental habitat condition assessments including tree surveys.

Feeding information into the asset management programme and monitoring progress.

Observing, identifying and reporting environmental and safety risks including dealing with customer enquiries.

Raising works through the supply chain and checking on completion.

Following safety procedures and adhering to Highways England values and behaviours.

Liaising with engineers, other inspectors and the wider project team.

Administrating associated documents - electronic filing, hardcopy filing, archiving etc.

Data input and interpretation of GIS systems and desktop search engines.

Input into tablet based asset management computer system.

 

About you

You would need the ability to gather, analyse and interpret a range of field based environmental surveys including tree safety inspections and habitat condition surveys.

You will need a broad environmental knowledge of environmental issues including air, water, noise, biodiversity, heritage and landscape.

We are looking for someone who can identify UK protected, invasive and non-native species and their associated diseases and potential safety risks.

You would ideally be familiar with UK legislation in relation to environmental management and highways.

We would like someone with experience of GIS and data management systems.

Good communication skills required.

A Full Driving license is essential.

Relevant degree/qualifications or commensurate level of work experience.

Accredited arboriculturalist would be desirable or working towards.
