''A great place to be cared for; a great place to work''

Do you want to work for an organisation who has just received an overall rating of GOOD from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) with a rating of OUTSTANDING in care?

Serving a population of around 365,000, The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust operates from three main hospital sites: Furness General Hospital in Barrow, Royal Lancaster Infirmary in Lancaster and Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two enthusiastic and motivated Optometrists to join our expanding service. These are newly developed posts within our establishment that we are very excited to offer. The posts will involve working within the Paediatric and Medical Retina Services.

As the successful candidate you will be under the Ophthalmologist supervision and will have the opportunity to work collaboratively across the Trust as members of the wider Ophthalmology team.

Although experience would be beneficial, Medical Retina training will be provided to the successful candidate.

You should be qualified, with a good work ethic and willing to go the extra mile to provide the best service for the patients.

The posts will be based in Kendal. Kendal is a market town in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria. Approximately eight miles south-east of Windermere, 19 miles north of Lancaster, and 23 miles north-east of Barrow-in-Furness. It’s ideally located for the best of country and town life.

Kendal might seem like a peaceful spot away from it all, but it’s very well connected. Ideal if you want to pop to the city, or commute further afield.

Kendal railway station has connections to Windermere, while Oxenholme Lake District railway station offers direct routes to and from London Euston, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Kendal is just 8 miles from the M6, and bypassed by the A591. So there are good links to Windermere, Keswick, and the A590 to Barrow. And you can get to Kirby Lonsdale, Skipton and Yorkshire easily via the A65.

Kendal has lots of things to do in and around the town, a tempting choice of tearooms, pavement cafes, traditional Kendal pubs or stylish restaurants. There’s a farmers market on the last Friday of each month. Active visitors should head to the large sports and leisure Centre where there is an indoor climbing wall or Kendal dry ski slope.

There’s also plenty of things to do near and around Kendal such as major historic attractions such as Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall.

There are a number of primary schools in the area. Kiikbie Kendal is also an academy school, with a business and enterprise college. Further education is also provided through Kendal college which has been judged as outstanding by Ofsted.

Anyone newly appointed to the trust will be subject to the completion of a satisfactory 6 month probationary period (this includes bank staff). This will give the new staff member an opportunity to become familiar with the role and working environment.

We will also consider applications from optometrists interested in providing Paediatric/Medical retina sessional work within the Trust setting.
