Forest Craftsperson
North & West Cumbria Beat

North England Forest District is led by Kevin May and has a complement of over 120 staff and comprises 61000 hectares of forest and 25000 hectares of open land. Annual timber production is 590 000 m3 (30% of FE Englands timber production), restocking of 800ha and over 700,000 visit to the Districts five visitor hubs. The District has 45 SSSIs totalling over 10 000 ha and is a major contributor to biodiversity through projects such as red squirrels, ospreys and red kites, ancient woodland restoration, wildland, limestone woodland and blanket bog restoration.

The North and West Cumbria beat comprises 16 woodlands extending to an area of 7,500 hectares. The beat includes the western lakeland valleys of Miterdale, Blengdale and Ennerdale as well as Whinlatter, Wythop and Dodd Wood around Bassenthwaite Lake and Highstand and Coombs wood just south of Carlisle. The beat team is involved in Wild Ennerdale ( and supporting the provision of a high quality visitor experience through woodland management centred around Whinlatter and Dodd.
The beat team is led by two Foresters and includes two Works Supervisors who support the beats annual 50 hectare restock and 35,000m3 harvesting programmes. The latter increasingly focussed on thinning steep ground and areas managed under continuous cover.
The two work supervisors are supported by two forest craftsperson teams one based in North Cumbria and one in West Cumbria.

Purpose of the Job

The post holder will work as part of a two person team to help maintain and enhance the Forestry Commission estate using a full range of practical forestry and countryside skills, including chainsaw/clearing saw work, fencing, path maintenance, planting and helping lead a weekly volunteer group.
The post holder will be expected to support the Districts Strategic Plan in accordance with the Forestry Commissions vision by implementing programmes of work primarily focussed across the West Cumbria area as part of a two person team in a motivated and enthusiastic way and maintain good relations with the public, partners and customers.

The post holder will report initially to a base at the beat office at Peil Wyke (CA13 9YG) east of Cockermouth . The post holder will initially work with the North Cumbria team to gain experience and may work with the team as part of joint working into the future.

Key Work Areas

General Estate maintenance - Carry out a diverse range of practical estate maintenance works to a high standard in accordance with health and safety and environment guidance. Work includes, fencing and gate repairs, tree felling and respacing, conservation habitat management, weeding, grass strimming and tree planting.

Facility checks - Undertake condition surveys of hazardous trees, mine shafts and other forest estate features. Carry out remedial works.

Volunteer support Work with the Wild Ennerdale volunteer group supporting and organising weekly volunteering activities.

Customer Care - Champion the vision and ethos of the organisation when talking to customers, visitors, partners and stakeholders, providing information and ensuring customer satisfaction.

Person Specification

Experience and Professional/Technical Expertise


Experience of practical work in the countryside and a general understanding of forestry, nature conservation and countryside related issues.

A familiarity with a variety of hand tools and ability to demonstrate competence in their use.

NPTC certification and experience (or equivalent) in at least one of the following manual felling with chainsaw (units 201,202,203 or equivalent), clearing saw or quadbike.


Experience of working with a wide range of diverse teams including volunteers.

Experience in stock fencing.
