DNV GL Oil & Gas Region UK is seeking a full-time Mechanical Technician to join our Research & Testing team, which performs large and full-scale major hazard tests.

 

The purpose of the role is to be part of a team that designs, builds, operates and maintains experimental test rigs used for major hazard research and testing (fire, explosion, dispersion, cryogenic etc.).

 

The person should have a solid background in welding and fabrication, with the ability to function effectively in high pressure environments while multi-tasking, be self-motivated, resourceful, and able to work with minimum direct supervision. This position is based at Spadeadam.

The Mechanical Technician assumes a high level of responsibility, supporting our Construction and Maintenance teams in their delivery of client projects. Successful Mechanical Technicians are fast learners and self-motivated, independent workers. They have the ability to work under pressure and the willingness to work in varying conditions.

 

The main responsibility of the Mechanical Technician is to design, construct and maintain experimental/test rigs  in accordance with Clients timelines. Duties include:

  • Fabrication of metal components (including structural components) ensuring that the highest standards in finish and tolerances, in accordance with information supplied, are achieved using recognised industry best practice
  • Welding of components and framework using a variety of welding processes
  • Operation of manual and automated machine tools, as part of the fabrication process when required
  • Operation of construction plant (including lifting equipment)
  • Understanding design and fabrication drawings
  • Maintaining machinery, tools, gauges and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements for testing activities
  • Sharing industry knowledge/training apprentices

Position Qualifications

Technical / Professional Expertise and Qualifications Required

  • A HNC or equivalent in an engineering field
  • Profound experience in welding and fabrication
  • Relevant CITB/RTITB plant certificates
  • Experience working with machinery
  • Good communication and influencing skills

Competency Requirements

  • Attention to detail is critical
  • Familiarity with workshop environment and handheld tools and machinery
  • Ability to work with tight response times, ensuring inquires and issues are dealt with in a timely manner
  • Customer focused and results driven is key
  • Proven Health, Safety and Environment mindset
  • Excellent organisational skills - Ability to plan and prioritise own workload and work on own initiative as well as manage conflicting deadlines
  • Ability to work pro-actively within a team environment
  • Able to work on own initiative
